Grievances are on the rise.  It can be very hard to manage them objectively.

Small organisations find it extremely difficult when an owner, or a key manager, has a grievance against them.

The mere fact of the grievance can damage relationships irreparably.  Grievances are also often the precursor to employment tribunal claims.

Responding appropriately to a grievance can enable you to:

  • Successfully defend a tribunal claim
  • Resolve workplace conflict in a constructive way
  • Send out the right message about your business to your managers, other employees and customers

So how should you do this?

My advice is to find someone impartial who can really look at what has gone on from all angles.  They need sufficient time to be able do a proper investigation, and they also need to be able to win the trust of all of the parties concerned.

Line managers rarely have the time, skill or inclination to really examine matters thoroughly and impartially.  It’s not their ‘day job’ after all!
