If you don’t personally design and manage your career you will find that you have automatically handed over the task to someone else - often a line manager or an employer. 

Your future should be defined by your own actions, thoughts, choices and decisions - not someone else’s. 

As Oprah Winfrey famously implied, we should paint our own career canvas. 

And therein lies the rub - do you know how to do this? In the first instance it's about learning the techniques and having the emotional intelligence that will enable you to manage proactively the working environment in which you spend half of your waking life for about 240 days a year.
