To criticise or to critique?

"Criticism" and "critique", what's the difference? Whether you are dishing it out or on the receiving end it's a good idea to know the difference between the two.

Criticism is negative and general, "Your report on the environmental impact of modern life was a waste of paper." A typical response from the recipient is to tear it up and start again, still with no idea how to improve it. Don't do that; ask for clarification.

A critique is positive and specific, "Your report makes some excellent points - more emphasis on recycling and I think you're there, particularly if you quote some of the recent statistics from the World Economic Forum." Thanks, I'll get onto it right away.

When giving an opinion never criticise, always offer a critique, but on the receiving end always be grateful.
